Getty Images is a well-known platform that offers both stock photos as well as
editorial images of current events and celebrities. It was one of the first companies to start licensing stock imagery online. Since it was founded in 1995, it has become one of the premier stock and editorial photography websites in the world.
The site claims to have an astonishing number of assets in its gallery. They offer 125 million high-quality royalty-free images to their clients, covering a wide variety of topics, including editorial imagery.
The platform, along with its micro-stock site iStock, reaches over 1.5 million customers around the world. For Getty Images, customers will need to buy a Rights Managed license. That means you don’t pay for the pictures, but the right to use them on specific platforms such as web or print.
You’ll often see Getty Images used in news articles. The best thing about them is the photo sale price is fantastic, even for small resolution images. So even though the commission is only 20%, you can still make a decent amount.
Getty Images is on the higher end of stock photography sites. It attracts brands and publishers looking for high-quality or hard-to-find exclusive images to license. Getty Images has one of the best selling prices among sites to sell photos online. Often seen as the top dog of stock photography, Getty Images boasts unbelievable quality images and has an impressive range of clients.
How to get in and earnings potential
Both on iStock and Getty it can be challenging to get your photography approved for sale. They have very high standards and limit the numbers of each type of image. To apply, you need to submit six images. Getty then determines if your material is appropriate for either iStock or Getty.
They only pay out 20% commission to photographers, but the amount of traffic that Getty receives means more potential sales, making it worth it for many photographers.
Getty looks for images that convey emotions or concept, and images that are engaging, exclusive, and unexpected.
If you get in, you have the chance to earn up to 20% in commission. Photos on the site sell for hundreds of dollars, so that percentage can make you quite some profit. iStock (owned by Getty images) is a good choice for beginners who can earn 15-45% commission on each image.
Getty sells images in different sizes: small for $150, medium for $350 and large for $499
Note : images are uploaded as exclusive, so you cannot sell images anywhere else if they have been uploaded to Getty Images.
Licensing terms: All photos are exclusive to Getty Pay rate: 20% (on a high base figure)
To get started with Getty Images, download their contributor app (available for iPhones and Android systems) and share 3 – 6 of your best images. They will review your work, and they’ll let you know if you get accepted into the program. Must be at least 18 years old to apply.
